Summary

In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon。

But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans。

He wants to pick up girls。

Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe。 Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not。 After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth--even chance encounters with beautiful women。 The only problem? He's the one who winds up the damsel in distress!

Typical lightnovel prose。 Not …too bad for a translated lightnovel。 Some awkward translations。 Lots of little editing errors。 I know from skimming later volumes that it does get better。Honestly, the easiest parts to read were the ones not in the protagonist's view, and also, not in first person。 The protagonist doesn’t grab me overly much but I can admit I am biased against him。 I will go deeper into that later, but basically it boils down to: cannot identify with him and his influence on the wo Typical lightnovel prose。 Not …too bad for a translated lightnovel。 Some awkward translations。 Lots of little editing errors。 I know from skimming later volumes that it does get better。Honestly, the easiest parts to read were the ones not in the protagonist's view, and also, not in first person。 The protagonist doesn’t grab me overly much but I can admit I am biased against him。 I will go deeper into that later, but basically it boils down to: cannot identify with him and his influence on the world around him is, in my opinion, unjustified。 It's the classic harem protagonist problem。 To make this guy have so many love interests, every male around him is going to be written as horrible people, and in very rare cases, taken。 I'm not even going to go into how much LGBT this series absolutely does not have。 。。。more

Love the Danmachi anime, but this novel is pretty terrible。 I think a lot of it has to do with the translation。 My two biggest complaints are there are often no details on who's speaking and the terrible first-person view。 I hope the translation gets better in future volumes。 Love the Danmachi anime, but this novel is pretty terrible。 I think a lot of it has to do with the translation。 My two biggest complaints are there are often no details on who's speaking and the terrible first-person view。 I hope the translation gets better in future volumes。 。。。more

I absolutely love the series! The characters are amazing, and the full on twist of all the tropes just make my heart leap for joy。 If you need a light-hearted fun read full of characters you just want to love, definitely pick this one up 😁

This book was a very intruging book。 It is a fantasy/mythology that is based on greek gods and sorcery。 The main character Bell Cranel joins a familia (like a clan, but more of a family) under the god Hestia。 I really like how Bell Cranel always wants to fight for others。 Bell has to fight monsters in a dungeon in order to "level up" and become stronger。 He has a great resolve to always fight and to not give up。 Throughout the book, he proves himself to be a strong but sometimes a little stupid This book was a very intruging book。 It is a fantasy/mythology that is based on greek gods and sorcery。 The main character Bell Cranel joins a familia (like a clan, but more of a family) under the god Hestia。 I really like how Bell Cranel always wants to fight for others。 Bell has to fight monsters in a dungeon in order to "level up" and become stronger。 He has a great resolve to always fight and to not give up。 Throughout the book, he proves himself to be a strong but sometimes a little stupid character。 。。。more

✨ I’m such a weeb ✨(I feel like there’s a lot of reviews from people who haven’t watched the anime, I’ve already seen it and bought this because I adore it already)This book explains stuff so much clearer than the anime !! Not so much a negative but where this volume ends seems so bizarre to me。 I’m not sure if I’d buy the second volume if I didn’t know my favourite characters were about to be introduced。 Although, the epilogue at the back was so touching, and not seen in the anime so I was stoked for new content。 Overall, I know I’ll read this again, lend it to my sisters and tell everyone to watch it all over again。 Sorry to the haters I just love it 。。。more

This didn’t really feel like a book, more like a dream I had when I was 14。 I was watching a lot of anime, and had never been remotely close to a girlfriend。 I think that guy would have loved this book。I bought this based on title alone, as I was browsing through the manga section of a bookstore。 And, to its credit, the title is engaging, as much as it is confusing。 I think trying to understand exactly what it was asking from me was the selling point for me。 It’s as if the book itself wanted me This didn’t really feel like a book, more like a dream I had when I was 14。 I was watching a lot of anime, and had never been remotely close to a girlfriend。 I think that guy would have loved this book。I bought this based on title alone, as I was browsing through the manga section of a bookstore。 And, to its credit, the title is engaging, as much as it is confusing。 I think trying to understand exactly what it was asking from me was the selling point for me。 It’s as if the book itself wanted me to enter it’s world and confront deep questions about the ethics of some of these classic fantasy tropes, where men, in exchange for bold acts of violence, receive a gf as a prize。 Or possibly, should you attempt to routinely risk your life for the fleeting attempt that you may find your true goal along the way。If you want a book to satisfy your deep criticisms of the patriarchy, and the things humans do for love, don’t read this book。 There’s nothing for you here。This is a book where every woman in the world is hot, has a massive chest, and loves the main character。 The goddess, Hestia, is called Loli Big Boobs。 The main characters life altering advice is “every man needs a harem。” This is just the kind of world we’re in for。 If you’re cool with that, it’s a fun read。 And, to its credit, there’s a lot of creativity in the world building。 Regular life has video game mechanics here。 You always know what the stakes are, because the book tells you。 MC is level one, but the monster is level five。 Danger。 Hot girl knight is level five, so she kills monster to save him。 That’s the prologue。 When the main character grows, his stats get higher。 The world being designed around these mechanics is fun to see, and the way that gods create different cartels doing whatever the god wants because they want to have fun with mortals is a really cool idea。 In fact, there are some really good moments in this book。 The final few paragraphs really confused me because they were such a turn, and I went from reading this book as a meme to being engaged and really curious where it would go, even to the point of considering buying the next one just to understand what I read。 The benefit of having simple characters is when they deviate from expectation it can be really engaging, but only if it’s done well。 Should you read this? Maybe。 If you’re like me in the past, a 14 year old guy looking for wish fulfillment, I think it’s fun。 And I did enjoy my time in the world, and I’m curious where it will go from here。 I know there’s an anime that’s currently on Netflix, so I might just watch that。 It’s campy, sometimes it’s predictable, but there’s certainly a place for art like that。 2020 sucks。 Things suck a lot。 This book is fun, and funny, whether or not it’s intentional, and that’s what I wanted。 I’m really glad I read it。 So if you have a few hours, it’s a good time。But come on, Loli Big Boobs?Actually, now that I think about it, best book ever made。 。。。more

Honestly, the premise sounds interesting。 Gods, monsters, and humans mingling together in a world where there is magic and status sounds like it could be a great story。 I, truly, hope it follows through with a good story。

First off, and most significant as concerns my enjoyment of this novel。。。 whoever proofread this translation before publication is a cunt。 So many fuckin' typos。 There are dropped letters here and there, but the biggest grievance comes on page 102, where it says "Invitations to the Celebration had been disturbed by the host's Familia。" The context concerns the god Ganesha throwing a party for his fellow gods, having enlisted his adventurers to spread the word。 It's clear the intended word was "d First off, and most significant as concerns my enjoyment of this novel。。。 whoever proofread Celebration had been disturbed by the host's Familia。" The context concerns the god Ganesha throwing a party for his fellow gods, having enlisted his adventurers to spread the word。 It's clear the intended word was "distributed" rather than "disturbed。" The goof changes the sentence completely and it's quite funny。 These fuckups don't exactly harm the quality of the novel otherwise, as we can imagine Fujino Omori probably didn't include them in the original Japanese, so a more forgiving reader might look past Yen Press's transgression, but this is neither the first nor the last time they dropped the ball on editing, and it's kind of a shame they hold the licenses to so many light-novel franchises。As for the book itself, it's quite fine。 I expected more of a brainless power-fantasy, but it looks like this series follows the trope of "silly/clumsy protagonist with overpowered bullshit ability" rather than the "stoic protagonist with overpowered bullshit ability" trope, the latter of which interests me less, as I prefer my "isekai" shit focus more on comedy。 The thing is, DanMachi isn't actually isekai, instead being one of those handful of regular-fantasy stories that happens to use JRPG mechanics rather than bothering to create an original system。 In fairness to Omori, he does something neat with how his adventurers have game-like stats: every adventurer must receive a god's blessing, after which the blessing interacts with the growing ability of the adventurer as he trains, bestowing them with enhancements in strength, defense, agility, utility, and magic parameters。 Before the gods came to the lower world, there were a number of adventurers who journeyed with raw power from their own inherent ability。 The new blessings of the gods are basically a power-up that allows regular humans (and elves and dwarves and things) to advance beyond their own individual powers to conquer the Dungeon。 There's a concrete reason for how this shit works, unlike other series that vaguely grant characters "experience points" without bothering to describe how they make sense (though I can only think of KonoSuba doing this off the top of my head, and that's a parody anyway)。 Another neat thing is that the Dungeon itself is capable of birthing enemies from its walls, which provides an in-universe explanation for constantly spawning enemies, allowing the many adventurers to keep working at their job endlessly (the text mentions outright how the Dungeon thus provides limitless resources, but I guess Omori hasn't realized how bad that'd fuck an economy)。The basic story here is that this kid Bell wants to become an adventurer so he could slay some puss。 He's a physically weak 14-year-old, but since this is a light novel he has to have some minor bullshit power, and in this case Bell is capable of rapid growth as an adventurer so long as he has a concrete goal for which he is intensely passionate。 This is first seen when he starts level-grinding a bit to try to impress this chick Aiz who saved him in the volume's beginning, and for whom he developed a crush。 He later overhears Aiz's teammates shit on him while recounting the story of his being saved, after which he runs crying to the Dungeon to grind some more, with the intent of proving the guys wrong (Aiz seems to pity the kid, and probably "like" him, by the way)。 Bell's goddess Hestia wants to do something to make him love her。 This random waitress from a bar in town wants to ride his dick。 The Goddess of Beauty Freya is fuckin' fiending for him。 So the climax involves Bell seeking to train in the Dungeon, getting sidetracked by a mission from Syr[the barmaid]'s coworkers to find her in a crowd and return her wallet, and getting caught in a battle with a big gorilla who was let loose by a thirsty Freya who wants to see Bell do something courageous。 Bell fights to defend Hestia from the gorilla, making use of a bullshit-hax dagger she had made by fellow goddess Hephaistos。 Freya walks away with no one seeing her, Aiz was nearby to overhear villagers praise Bell's efforts, and Hestia squirts herself hugging Bell at the end。 It's unclear what direction the series will take next。One interesting thing about the novel is that much of the perspective concerns Bell thinking in real-time。 I can't recall if I've seen anything like this before in a light novel。 It's kind of annoying, and I'd certainly burn a real "literary" novel for trying some wack shit like this, but it works well enough here。 Like, Bell would be walking through the city and his internal monologue would say shit like "Oh, there's x!," or something, as if he's taking note of what he sees and does as they happen。 It makes action scenes more fun, I guess, but there are other times when it feels like Omori is just padding the novel out because he shot himself in the foot with this prose style and has little choice but to keep it going, making Bell look like a spazz。 And sometimes the novel goes into third-person anyway, so it's not really necessary to have done the present-tense stuff in the first place。It's also strange that the volume has very little to do with trying to pick up girls in a dungeon。 That is, Bell's goal in adventuring is to make a harem, but the story of this particular book ends up having nothing to do with meeting girls。 Through Bell's actions, a harem seems to steadily form and evolve, but Bell remains completely oblivious。 This is par for the course for harem-genre works, that the protagonist would have bitches on the dick 24/7 without fuckin' any of 'em, and indeed much of the genre's humor comes from characters fumbling their way around erotic/romantic scenarios without understanding what's going on, but few such series are as bold as this one in explaining the genre's tropes in the title。Shoutout to my boy Yasuda。 I could easily say I only read this novel because I like the art, having seen the artist's work previous with the Devil Survivor and recent Digimon games。 He does this funny thing where he gives most of the girls huge tits that defy physics and float rather than hang。 Zany。 I expected something similar here, but the artwork is a bit tame。 Omori's text mentions Hestia's large bust with some frequency, and other girls' bodies are described in some detail。 Yasuda does the descriptions justice, more or less, but there seem to be few illustrations explicitly emphasizing the characters' assets。 Most of the art is rather matter-of-act in depicting the story。 The only things really pushing the envelope are the color illustrations in the volume's front, one showing Loki squeezing Hestia's tits (with Loki's thighs spilling out of her tiny shorts), and the backside seemingly showing off Aiz's pancake ass。 What's funny is Omori's text mentions several gods checking out Freya's thick ass in Ganesha's party, but there is no back-view illustration of Freya that might prove whether or not Yasuda's expanded from being mostly a breast man。 。。。more

There's a part of me that is mostly just angry that I didn't get much chance to read books like this when I was a horny teenager。 It would have been perfect for 16-year-old Doug, no doubt。 All the women have big boobs and just immediately fall in love with a scrappy loser who, gosh darn it, tries his best despite sucking in most ways (including recognizing that every female character who has talked to him for more than 10-seconds is hungry for that teenage loser flesh)。 That's the kind of thing There's a part of me that is mostly just angry that I didn't get much chance to read books like this when I was a horny teenager。 It would have been perfect for 16-year-old Doug, no doubt。 All the women have big boobs and just immediately fall in love with a scrappy loser who, gosh darn it, tries his best despite sucking in most ways (including recognizing that every female character who has talked to him for more than 10-seconds is hungry for that teenage loser flesh)。 That's the kind of thing that I could have used in my then-life。 Scrappy loser wakes up on a couch and a she-looks-like-a-kid-with-big-boobs-but-she-is-really-a-god goddess is big-boobs all up on his chest while he is embarrassed? HA! Yessir。 It would have been heavenly。 Forty-something Doug is less amused by such antics despite sharing some of teenager Doug's appreciations。 What I did like, though, is just the world itself。 I am a sucker for metagaming and JRPGs。 This book combines them in spades。 There is a dungeon, called Dungeon, that adventurers travel down and fight monsters and level up。 The Dungeon literally spawns the monsters from its walls proper random encounter style。 Adventurers bind with a god who grants them the ability to be adventurers by inscribing stats on the adventurers' backs using godblood like ink。 Just that alone is golden to me。 Characters with literal character sheets on their back going into a Dungeon with monster spawns to grind and level up? And when the monsters die they drop shards and sometimes other bits of loot before fading away? And this series makes this "world within a literal game-of-gods" make something like sense? Ah。。。so good。 Unfortunately, for current me (and what would have been fortunate for younger me), the world building takes backseat to the various horny antics and often overly-extended middlin' dialogue。 I'm into the series, no doubt, but every time person-with-[big]-boobs shows up and insta-falls for scrappy loser who tends to bumble I found myself mostly wishing there was more Dungeon-delving going on。 A somewhat glitchy, maybe over-literal translation does not help this imbalance。 There's a line where the central goddess falls out on the floor with her butt in the air and the translation is something literally like, "The goddess was laying on the floor in a naughty pose。" Good lord。 In other words, I am definitely going to dive more into this series and see how the world building goes and generally wish all these young, beautiful, oblivious people good luck towards getting their horny on。 Ah, youth。 Wasted on 'em, am I right? For those who do like purposefully cringey romantic comedy with a fantasy twist, you will no doubt get even more enjoyment out of this one。 I'm talking to you, 16-year-old Doug, you sweaty, confused bastard。 。。。more
